See My Story is a collaborative, community-based, multimedia project which combines life-size portrait photography with personal stories in an effort to raise awareness of homelessness in Evanston. Photographer Doug Haight and a small team from the community, including Perspective Gallery’s Bob Tanner and Bill Bridges, worked with project partners Connections for the Homeless and Interfaith Action of Evanston. Local homeless individuals were invited to share their personal narratives in order to gain a deeper understanding of their often complicated lives. Each portrait and its accompanying story is the result of a relationship that was built over time and was based on mutual trust and respect. The project recognizes each participant as a unique individual with a powerful story to tell.

See My Story will not only empower the subjects portrayed, but inspire homeless individuals in Evanston to see themselves with greater self-esteem, equity and opportunities. Another goal of See My Story is to bring together a diversity of people from Evanston, the Northshore and Chicago to experience the exhibit and participate in a community conversation that raises awareness about the challenges of homelessness and solutions to this chronic problem.

Perspective Group and Gallery, a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, is the project's sponsor. See My Story has received generous grants from the Evanston Arts Council and the Evanston Community Foundation. Additional completion funds came from a Go Fund Me campaign supported by friends in the community.
